An Israeli in the bay

Licensed!

DMV logoToday I got a license. Not for software, but a driver’s license. As of today, I am a fully licensed driver in the state of California. As I have mentioned earlier, I had to pass both a written and a driven exam. Today I passed the driven exam and immediately got a temporary license.

My plastic license will be mailed in 10 days, and then I will be just like any American with a Social Security Number, credit and debit card, and a driver’s license. I can’t vote and don’t have a US passport, but then again, most Americans don’t vote or have a passport either.

  1. Temp. license immediately?! Plastic in 10 days?!?! Not so in Israel… (and what the hell is a debit card?)

  2. I got a temp. license when I passed the written exam. Here even new drivers get a temp. license when they pass the written exam, but are allowed to only drive with a parent or other licensed driver.

A debit card is like a credit card but it charges immediately from your bank account. It can also be used as an ATM card (credit cards cannot be used as ATM cards unless you pay expensive fees).

Credit cards here are different from in Israel. Here you need to pay your bill every month by sending a check or online from your bank account. If you don’t pay they start charging very very high interest. There is no overdraft of any kind and if you expend too much you pay very high fees ($20 fee for a $1 overdraft, not including interest).

  3. Hmm, having an american credit card doesn’t sound like too much fun then.

  4. Many American do not have credit and debit cards not to mention a driver’s license.
And I guess they all have a social Security Number, but I’m guessing they do not all know it.
So you seem to be ahead…

  5. All americans know their social security number because they need to put it on every job application and tax form. And almost all americans have credit cards and debit cards. Credit card debt is a big problem in the U.S.

  6. Are you saying that all Americans apply for jobs many times and pay their taxes?
